Dracunculus Vulgaris

Description
Dracunculus Vulgaris (dragon Arum) Frost hardy perennial. I have found that this plant loves a shady sheltered position with well-drained soil. It is probably, one of the most vulgar plants on this site, but great fun to grow. The flowers are enormous, and have a rather revolting smell, flies like it! Luckily this smell does not last for very long. The other side to this plant is the foliage, which really is fascinating; the stem grows to about 3 ft if not taller, which is mottled green and brown, like a giraffe’s neck, preceding the stem is the rather interesting foliage, which sprays out like a fan. The plant starts growing early May reaching maturity in July and the foliage will carry through to November. I have always said this plant is a must have for those who enjoy the unusual but as its so easy to grow I think everyone should have a go. The image is from our garden (angliabulbs).
